Meet the Designer: Claudia Bradby

March 23, 2015 Allison Bray

In our first 'Meet the Designer', we interviewed prolific contemporary jewellery designer, Claudia Bradby.

How did you get started?

Having been given a wedding anniversary gift that didn't really suit me, I realised I wasn't a very traditional jewellery person and didn't want just one item of jewellery to wear every day, or indeed for dressing up/going out in. As I was living in Hong Kong at the time, an image of pearls on knotted leather fired my imagination and I set about designing some more relaxed designs, but using real materials. I just fell in love with pearls as a material.

What feelings or reactions do you hope to arouse in people who view your work?

Firstly I hope they will fall in love with the jewellery and secondly that it will form part of their everyday go-to wardrobe, slowly evolving into a working wardrobe of jewellery. When I design I also keep in mind how something will be worn and what job or jobs it can do, which is really important to me.

What inspires your collections?

I am very influenced by how we live our lives, and try to find jewellery that will fit every occasion. I like to design around a theme, be it a perfect summer's day by the beach, or an atmospheric evening ski through a twilight forest. I love colour, shape and form and this informs all my designs. I am also obsessive about picking out the pearls we use so that I can offer a far better quality pearl for our price than you would normally expect.

What has been the high point of your career so far?

Being stocked by Liberty was pretty good, topped by the ongoing partnership with John Lewis, and the success we are enjoying shaking up the pearl offerings in jewellery stores.

When and why did you decide to pursue art as a career?

I have always had a strong creative streak, which started off with cooking and is now focused on jewellery.

When and why did you decide to pursue art as a career?

I would like CB jewellery to be the go-to brand for pearl jewellery, on a par with Links of London. We have a similar desire to bring strong design to the high street at affordable prices.
