In our third 'Meet the Designer', we interviewed the brilliant contemporary jewellery designer, Mirri Damer.
When and how did you get started?
I studied Fine Art (sculpture) for my degree and when I graduated I wanted to learn a trade so I could make a living by making things. Jewellery seemed a perfect fit. I did an advanced jewellery course at Sir John Cass in London. I then worked as a bench worker and then as a designer for an established jewellery company for 7 years, where I learnt about the trade.
What feelings or reactions do you hope to arouse in people who view your work?
I wish to create precious items that people can wear everyday. A Low-key luxury look.
What inspires your collections?
I live by the sea in Cornwall and I am inspired by my surroundings, the weather worn coast but also by the way of life. My jewellery looks better when worn on the beach!
What has been the high point of your career so far?
I am immensely proud to have been selected to exhibit at the prestigious Goldsmiths Fair. I was commissioned by comedian Dawn French to make her engagement and wedding rings - which was great!
When and why did you decide to pursue art as a career?
Art has always been part of my life and I can't imagine a career which doesn't involve drawing and making. I have an exciting public commission coming up, which I am looking forward to. I am working on new designs and look forward to launching these later in the year.
