Statement jewellery can accentuate an outfit or help complete your ‘look’. But how can you get the most out of it? Wearing statement jewellery to best effect requires a little effort and just a touch of panache. Luckily, there are a few simple tips to help you wear this type of piece with real style.
1. Simplicity matters
You want your statement pieces to stand out. As such, they are best worn with simple clothing. Avoid loud patterns, embroidery, sequins and other visual flourishes as these can distract from your jewellery. Let your jewellery speak for itself; it doesn’t need additional support from the rest of your ensemble!
2. Take a ‘hands on’ approach
If you choose to wear rings as statement pieces, you should remember that they will draw attention to your hands. As such, make sure you keep those hands in good condition by moisturising them and treating your nails to a simple manicure. This will help bolster your overall appearance and add to the effect of the statement piece.
3. Match your neckline
Similarly, a statement necklace will draw attention to the neckline of your outfit. So choose pieces that match. Choose a rounded piece for a rounded neckline, or a angular piece for square or geometric neck.
4. Consider your aesthetic
The purpose of statement jewellery is to help define an outfit. It is therefore important to consider what ‘look’ you’re aiming for before selecting the jewellery you intend to wear. Are you trying to create a feminine outfit that evokes a bygone era of elegance and refinement? In that case, you should opt for pearls and other vintage-style pieces of jewellery. Are you striving for a more bohemian look? In that case, colourful beads and experimental pieces will help you achieve the desired effect. These are just two examples of effects that statement jewellery can help you create. Whatever aesthetic you wish to indulge in, statement jewellery can help, provided you select it with care.
5. Space it out
Statement jewellery is, by definition, bold and powerful. Each piece needs its own space in order to look its best. Therefore, you need to be careful of where you position each piece. You should avoid wearing two pieces of statement jewellery too close together as this will make your ensemble look overcrowded and clunky. For example, don’t wear two statement rings on the same hand or adorn your neck with two or more necklaces. Instead, choose jewellery that you can space out, thereby giving each individual piece the space it needs to really shine.
