The colour of the clear sky, calm seas and Patrick Dempsey’s eyes, sapphires are one of the most popular precious gemstones on the market.

Sapphires are often chosen as a luxury gift. They’re the traditional present for the 45th wedding anniversary (though we’re certainly not advocating that you wait that long!) and are the birthstone for those with September birthdays.

These glorious blue gemstones have a rich history. In Persian legend it was said that the earth was resting on a giant sapphire, which is why their colour matches the sky.

Worn best with…

Sapphires are known for their regal links and understated elegance. They’re typically worn best with classic cuts and muted colours: in other words, this is a stone that should be allowed to take centre stage. If you do want to pair your sapphire jewellery with other precious pieces, they work best with timeless diamonds.

Best suited to…

Engagement rings, special gifts, celebrations and black tie occasions.

Famous sapphires…

The Star of Bombay is a 182 carat cabochon-cut sapphire that originates from Sri Lanka. It gained worldwide notoriety when it was bought by Douglas Fairbanks, a famous silent movie star to give to Academy Award winning actress Mary Pickford. It is now on display in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. The gin fans among you may also be interested to know that this particular gem inspired the name of Bombay Sapphire gin.

Another hugely famous sapphire is the Duchess of Cambridge's engagement ring. The 12 carat oval ceylon sapphire is surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds. The ring was created by Garrard for Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s engagement in 1981 and was given by Prince William to Kate Middleton in 2010.
