Our favourite period drama has returned to our television screens. The sixth and final series of Downton Abbey began this month. We’re thrilled and disappointed in equal measure: once it’s all over how will we manage without the intrigue, the fashion inspiration or Lady Violet’s vicious tongue?!
Lady Violet aside, we think there’s something very special about one Downton character in particular: Lady Mary. Not only is she ferociously independent, she’s also terribly stylish. We love her dresses, we love her hats… but most of all, we love her jewellery!
Lady Mary’s jewellery style is, above all else, elegant. She wears pieces that reflect the art deco fashions of the period but they always suit her classic signature look. She’s most often seen wearing timeless stones such as diamonds and pearls, though she does take risks with more dramatic pieces on occasion. We think she looks particularly stunning in black onyx!
Of course, the eldest Downton daughter is lucky enough to have a whole collection of heirloom aristocratic jewellery at her disposal. If you don’t have a selection of diamond tiaras on hand, don’t despair. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get Lady Mary’s elegant look by wearing British contemporary jewellery.
If Lady Mary were to take a visit to York today and pop into the Monkey Puzzle Jewellery shop, we think she’d be most taken with our Claudia Bradby collection. This designer is forward-thinking enough to impress Lady Mary, but relies on classic style roots to produce intricate elegant pieces.
If you’d like to pay homage to Lady Mary’s style, we suggest taking a look at these Classic White Pearl Drop Earrings, the Couture Necklace or the Lucia necklace. If you’re keen to recreate a more dramatic look, try the Etna necklace or the iconic Onyx Pendant. And for a contemporary take on the art deco look, we love this stainless steel and rhodium brooch. Bonus points if you wear it on your hat!
