Aquamarines are gemstones of a strikingly clear turquoise. They make us think of tropical beaches and cloudless blue skies! Here’s the science-y bit: aquamarines are part of the beryl gemstone family which makes them very closely related to emeralds. Unlike emeralds, aquamarines are known for their clarity as they are almost completely free of inclusions.
According to legend, aquamarines originated from the underwater treasure chests of mermaids! This nautical heritage has meant that the gems have long been considered lucky for sailors
Talking of good luck, we’ve also heard countless old wives’ tales about aquamarines and happy marriages. Not only that, but any woman who wears these gems are also said to attract joy and wealth. Seems like a very good deal to us…

Worn best with…

We think aquamarine looks at its best on a background of classic silver. The two materials share a luminous quality that makes them look stunning together.

Best suited to…

The great thing about aquamarines is that their colour looks great with just about every skin tone, eye colour and hair colour. This makes them incredibly versatile gems that work well at a huge variety of occasions. Aquamarines are typically more inexpensive than other blue-tinged gems such as sapphires and so are more likely to be used in wearable every day jewellery.

Famous Aquamarines…

The world has been lucky enough to witness some impressively huge aquamarines. Among the largest was a crystal found in Marambaia/Minas Gerais in Brazil, which is where a large portion of modern day aquamarines are mined. You may not believe this… but it weighed an incredible 110.5kg!
The largest aquamarine to ever be cut came to light in 1992. It was discovered in Idar-Oberstein in Brazil. This impressive gem, named the ‘Dom Pedro’ weighed 26kg and was cut by the gemstone designer Bernd Munsteiner.
