The term ‘statement jewellery’ gets thrown around a lot in fashion circles. There’s no exact definition, but basically it refers to any piece of jewellery that is crying out to be the main focal point in an outfit.

Your statement piece may be a bejewelled necklace, a chunky bangle, an extravagant pair of earrings, a knuckle-dusting cocktail ring or even an eye-grabbing brooch.

Whatever the individual piece, let it be known that we love statement jewellery. There’s something special about wearing a piece of jewellery so big and fabulous that it commands attention wherever you go.

But is there a right time and a wrong time for statement jewellery? We’ve put together a few guidelines to keep in mind when you’re rocking this look.

Make a statement with your jewellery when… you’re happy to talk about it

The thing about statement jewellery is that people will often want to comment on it. This can be a great ice breaker if you’re going to a party or a conference, but perhaps not so ideal if you’re spending the day somewhere you’d rather not stand out.

Make a statement with your jewellery when… the rest of your outfit is fairly low key

In order to let your statement piece really do it’s thing, you’ll want to make sure the rest of your outfit is reasonably simple. Layering a statement necklace over a statement dress and carrying a statement bag is a look that’s often best left to the style experts!

Make a statement with your jewellery when… you’re prepared to choose just one bold piece

The best statement looks happen when you only try to make one statement. Pairing a bold necklace with bold earrings and a bold bracelet will be far less effective style-wise than if you’d just stuck with one of the three. When it comes to statement jewellery, less really is more.

There’s no reason why statement jewellery can’t be appropriate for any occasion. Just choose your pieces carefully to ensure your look stays ‘sophisticated chic’ not ‘flea market fanatic’.
