Pedants may point out that this month’s gemstone isn’t technically a gemstone at all… but we’re not about to let a few facts come in between us and our jewellery! Amber is a beautiful substance made from fossilised tree resin, and it’s been adoring our bodies and our homes since the stone age more than 13,000 years ago.
Amber is an incredible substance. It occurs in a range of different shades, including the iconic yellowy orange as well as red, white, lemon, brown, black, green and even blue. Due to the way these gems were formed, they sometimes include trapped plant or animal matter such as insects, spider’s webs, bacteria, wood, mosquitos and flowers. These inclusions are generally more than a hundred million years old.
The latin name for amber is electrum, meaning ‘beaming sun’. This is derived from an ancient myth. According to the legend, when Phaeton, the son of the sun, was killed, his sisters went into mourning and turned into poplar trees. When they cried, their tears became amber.

Worn best with…

This versatile gem can be worn with all kinds of colours and styles. It sits well with both silver and gold toned metals, and looks gorgeous with a range of warm-toned colours. We think it looks wonderful with reds, browns, oranges, purples and navy blues.

Best suited to…

Amber is traditionally a less formal gemstone. Jewellery made from the resin is ideal for everyday and smart-casual wear.

Famous Amber…

A piece of amber was discovered in Italy in 2012 that included two trapped mites. These are said to be 230 million years old, making them the oldest animals ever to have been found preserved in the substance.
