Gemstone of the Month: Labradorite

Labradorite is a gem so shiny it has it’s very own optical effect, called labradorescence. This effect takes place when light shines on the layers of green, copper, gold and red that make up the seemingly greyish surface of the stone.

The gem was named after the Labrador area of Canada after stones were found there in the 18th century. That’s not to say, though, that no one knew about this gorgeous gem before then! The mineral was actually known long before this, particularly by the Boethuk people in Newfoundland and many of the older Inuit tribes.

Indeed, the Inuit people believe that labradorite is magical! Inuit mythology tells that labradorite gems fall from the frozen fires of the Northern Lights, and that their incredible shimmer is actually a kind of portal to other worlds.

Excuse us while we take a closer look at our labradorite gems…

Labradorite looks at it’s best when it is well lit! Why not wear it to a summer wedding, a formal day at the races or a candlelit dinner?

Famous Labradorite…

Legend tells that an Inuit warrior once struck a particularly special labradorite gem with his spear, creating the Aurelia Borealis.
