Tourmaline is a semi-precious gemstone that occurs in a whole spectrum of beautiful colours. The gems are most commonly black, but can also be colourless, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink or any combination of the above!
This gemstone originates from Sri Lanka and got it’s name from the Tamil name turmali. It was first seen in Europe in the 1600s when it was imported from Sri Lanka in large quantities by the Dutch East India Company.
In addition to it’s lovely bright colours, Tourmaline has a rather impressive party trick. It has a pyroelectric effect, meaning that it can actually attract and then repel hot ashes! This earned it the nickname the ‘Ceylonese Magnet’ and led to a belief that tourmaline was related to the philosopher’s stone.

Worn best with…

The great thing about tourmaline is that it comes in a wonderful range of colours and therefore works beautifully in just about any situation. We love single coloured tourmaline gems with both gold and silver metals… though a bi or even tri coloured gem would make a big statement!

Famous Tourmalines…

Some of the most famous tourmalines in the world weren’t actually supposed to be tourmalines at all! The infamous rubies in the Russian crown jewels are now believed by some people to have been tourmalines all along.
The biggest tourmaline in the world came from Paraiba. It is a blue-green colour, measures an impressive 36.44mm x 33.75mm x 21.85mm, and weighs 191.87 carats!
