Brigitte Bardot is a name synonymous with beauty, stardom and classic French style. During her heyday in the fifties and sixties, Bardot starred in forty seven films and recorded more than sixty songs. She’s best known for her roles in And God Created Woman, Le Mépris and Viva Maria! Since her retirement from the entertainment industry in 1973, Bardot has worked as an animal rights activist.
If there was one word to sum up Bardot’s look, it would be this: simple. She relied on classic lines, great accessories used sparingly, and tried-and-tested signature pieces. Even forty years later, a floppy hat, a cutesy bikini set or a dangly headscarf brings Bardot to mind. And, of course, this is an icon who even has a neckline named after her: the off the shoulder Bardot neckline is very in this season.
Bardot’s simple and sophisticated take on fashion extended to her jewellery. Unlike her contemporaries such as Elizabeth Taylor or Marilyn Monroe, Bardot was not one to go over the top with her bling! Instead, she opted for few, well-chosen pieces.
There’s definitely a lesson to be learnt here. What Bardot understood very well is the principle of ‘white space’. By wearing just one classic piece of jewellery at a time, she made sure that it would be noticed.
If Bardot is every over our side of the channel and was to pop into our contemporary designer jewellery shop in York, we think she’d be very taken by our Weston Scarves collection. These individually-printed silk scarves would be perfect for her signature headscarf look.
