Welcome to the engagement ring files. During this series we’re investigating what you need to know about the various engagement ring setting options. First up is the eternally popular classic solitaire.
What’s not to love about a beautiful gem in a classic setting? If you want your engagement ring to be totally timeless and stunningly simple, you’ll definitely want to check out a classic solitaire cut.
What does a classic solitaire look like?
A classic solitaire consists of a single metal band designed to draw focus on a single dazzling gem, usually a diamond. The gem sits on top of the band and is held in place by a number of matching metal prongs. In most cases there are four prongs, but some solitaire designs feature six prongs.
The term ‘solitaire’ refers to the fact that the ring is set with just one gem. There is some variation in the design as solitaires are available featuring a range of different diamond shapes. This include round solitaires (the classic option) as well as princess cut, emerald cut, oval cut, marquise cut and heart cut.
Setting the diamond on the band in this way means that more light is able to get to the gem and it will therefore sparkle more on your finger!
Though the solitaire engagement ring is now one of the most iconic designs, it was originally popularised by Tiffany & Co. They created their first six-prong solitaire in 1886 and this became the trademark ‘Tiffany setting’.
Is the classic solitaire right for you?
If you’re looking for an ornate ring with lots of detailing, the classic solitaire probably isn’t what you’re looking for.
